The focus of this
quarterly newsletter is to offer you free resources that can help you manage and lead during these uncertain and
challenging times.
In each issue, we will include a column we're calling "The Leadership Coach" which will contain an article by one
of our associates about an issue or topic that is especially important in today's business environment.
The topic for this issue's
"Leadership Coach" is "Giving Effective Feedback"
by Roz Turner. With layoffs and downsizing, it's even more important that each employee gets ongoing on-the-job
feedback. Read this article to see how you can improve the way you give feedback in your organization.
In our "Ask Us: Answers to Your Questions"
column, we will answer a question that has surfaced by a client recently. We would also like to hear from you, if you
have an issue, topic or question that we can address in this space in a future issue.
We'll also use this newsletter to recommend some of our favorite books and resources and will suggest links to other
resources you might find helpful.
We invite you to visit our newly redesigned website
at www.rozturner.com which includes a host of resources as well.
Ask Us: What's Your Question?
Question:
We recently had to lay off 10% of
our workforce, due to the current economy. The employees that are still here are having a hard time dealing with the layoffs
and feel they may be the next to go. I'm in charge of a large group and need to get them moving forward again. What should I
do?
Our Response:
Our quick and short answer is: Listen and communicate! Unfortunately, in challenging times, leaders can tend to
communicate less instead of more!
It is natural for employees to experience a host of emotions after a layoff occurs. They need to go through the emotions of
shock, denial, fear, anger and even depression before being able to get to understanding, acceptance and "moving forward". It
is important that you are open to listening and understanding where your employees are in the process.
Next, you have the opportunity to communicate your vision of a better, compelling future. Be sure that you continue to
supply your people with the facts about the situation; remember that when employees don't know the facts - they make up their
own interpretations to fill in the holes!
Summer Book Recommendation
In each issue of this newsletter we'll recommend a book as a resource. The book we're recommending in this issue is
Crucial Conversations: Tools for talking when the stakes are high" by Kerry
Patterson.
